Coming 2018 Black History Month! Black Broadway on U: In Small Spaces powered by Eaton Workshop celebrates four storied, small spaces and surviving historic community landmarks; 12th Street YMCA (the first African American Y in the world), The Whitelaw Hotel (D.C.’s first African American owned luxury hotel and apartment complex), Miner Normal School (D.C.'s 1st 'School for Colored Girls') and Georgia Douglas Johnson Residence (site of Saturday Nighters Salon) that still stand today along D.C.’s U Street/Shaw corridor.
These spaces signify “possibility and transformation,” “redemption and uplift” and “horizons of triumph” for African Americans in the late 19th century to 20th century supporting the intersection of arts, consciousness, cultural identity, progress and resilience.
